hey, im making a barstool racer for my small engines class at school, ive got everything figured out and am starting to build, but my only problem is what to use as brakes, ive already figured ou that bike brakes wont work, the rubber will just melt off, i am on a tight budget and cant afford proper go kart brakes, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions,i can make myself a disc and was wondering. will putting makeshift steel pads on a set of bike brakes have any stopping power at all? i jus need something that will slow it down when not under power..

U could make brakes the old way, with a plate that pushes aginest the tire.

You can always go with the old school minibike style of scrub brake
I used a version of that on the CHEAPO BARSTOOL
It really does work well enough to lock up the rear tires....... like thats why they are smooth now.

Start looking around and find an old wrecked motorcycle that has disc brakes. Use master cylinder and caliper and make your own rotor.

i got a caliper and master cylinder off ebay from a wrecked bike for like $9
you could always go with a sprocket as a brake rotor for a cheap fix till you can afford a real rotor,,,,

I once heard a guy say he put a band brake on his motor and used his clutch as a drum dont know how well it would work though

Bar Stool Racing 101...There is no such thing as Cheap Brakes!!! Especially on a Racing Bar Stool. Spend the bucks on a good working brake system and a good working KILL SWITCH.You can cut corners other places, maybe use used tires and wheels or maybe a used motor...These things are a handful to handle on a good day...BUT they need to stop and MUST be able to cut the power off when necessary. I ride my Racers all the time, probably more than most and the first thing I check is the KILL SWITCH and the brakes. Snakester:thumb:
